❤️ Purpur vs Paper: The Ultimate Battle for Server Performance
If you've tried to create a Minecraft server recently, you've probably run into an "alphabet soup" of names: Vanilla, Spigot, Paper, Tuinity, Pufferfish, Purpur…
Why is it so complicated? Shouldn't just downloading the file from Mojang be enough?
The short answer is: No, not if you want your server to survive more than 3 players.
In this article, we're going to clear the fog, explain why these options exist, and most importantly, help you decide which engine is perfect for your project between the two current titans: Paper and Purpur.
🧬 The Minecraft "Genealogy": Why do so many exist?
To understand what to choose, you first need to understand that the original Minecraft code (Vanilla) is not designed for high-performance multiplayer. It's great for playing on LAN with your brother, but if you put 20 people in it, the server will explode.
That's why the community created "Forks". Imagine a chain of improvements, where each software takes the previous one and makes it faster:
Vanilla (Mojang): The base code. Slow, single main processing thread.
Bukkit/Spigot: The grandfathers. They allowed the use of Plugins. Spigot optimized Bukkit, but today it is considered "Legacy technology".
PaperMC: The gold standard. It took Spigot and rewrote much of the logic to make it drastically faster.

Admin Note: As of today, there is no technical reason to use Spigot. Paper and its derivatives do the same thing, but infinitely better.

Paper is, currently, the default "operating system" for most professional servers. Its philosophy is simple: Performance and bug fixing, without touching game mechanics.
What does Paper do?
Asynchronous Optimization: Loads chunks and saves data on separate threads so the main game doesn't freeze.
Exploit Fixes: Patches item duplication and X-ray glitches that Mojang takes months to solve.
Fidelity: Strives to keep mechanics "Vanilla". If an iron farm works in Vanilla, it should work in Paper.

🔮 Contender #2: Purpur (Customization and Power)
Purpur is for admins who say: "Paper's performance is great, but I want MORE control".
Purpur is a "Fork of a Fork" (it's based on Paper). This means it has all of Paper's optimizations, but adds hundreds of configuration options that Mojang would never give you.
What makes Purpur different?
Inherits Pufferfish: Includes very aggressive performance patches that Paper sometimes doesn't accept.
Configurable Gameplay: Do you want villagers not to turn into witches? Do you want to ride Ravagers? Do you want the Ender Dragon to respawn every hour? Purpur lets you do it with a simple config change, without extra plugins.
